Ben Cayetano is on the verge of officially announcing his candidacy for mayor, and is planning to hold a press conference within days.

“We’ll announce it probably Thursday morning,” he told Inside Honolulu minutes ago.

Asked for more details, he chuckled and told us, “Wait for the press release.” He said he was in the process of looking at office space, presumably for campaign headquarters.

Cayetano is a Democrat and two-term Hawaii governor. He’s a vocal opponent of the rail project. Read more about what his leadership would mean for rail here: Could Honolulu’s Mayor Stop Rail Project?
