honolulu-politics:

Reached for comment about Kirk Caldwell’s new campaign for mayor, former governor and potential mayoral candidate Ben Cayetano said he had a death in the family and will not be making any announcements of his own right now.

“Yesterday, my wife’s mother died. So I’m pretty much trying to hold off any public statements, at least for a few days or maybe a week, in respect for family and what happened,” he told Inside Honolulu.

“Now that this happened, and I was pretty close to my mother-in-law, now that this happened we have to sit down and make funeral arrangements and do all the things that a family needs to do.”

Cayetano did make a brief statement about Caldwell. We’ll share that later in our story about today’s big announcement.
