Hawaii is sharing in a portion of more than $20 million in grant money that’s going to conserve coastal wetlands across the country. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar on Tuesday announced the grant money, which will benefit 24 projects in 13 states.

The Big Island is getting a $549,000 boost for a Honuapo Estuary Wetland restoration project.

“Coastal wetlands serve as some of nature’s most productive fish and wildlife habitat while providing storm protection, improved water quality, and abundant recreational opportunities for local communities,” Salazar said in a statement.
