More than 75 mayors today launched “Mayors for the Freedom to Marry,” a bipartisan push from city executives in favor of gay and lesbian marriage.

Honolulu’s Peter Carlisle is not among them.

Carlisle was in Washington D.C. this week for the U.S. Conference of Mayors winter meeting, where the initiative was launched. Spokeswoman Louise Kim McCoy said she couldn’t answer questions about Carlisle’s involvement in the discussions about gay marriage because he’s on his way back to Honolulu.

Carlisle was long associated with Hawaii’s Republican Party, but disavowed his connection to the party during the 2010 mayoral race. Both the mayor’s job and the city prosecutor’s job, which Carlisle held for 14 years, are nonpartisan in Honolulu.

Hawaii’s civil unions law went into effect Jan. 1.

Leading the gay marriage charge are New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg; Boston Mayor Thomas Menino; Houston Mayor Annise Parker, who is openly gay; San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders; and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.
