Congress may count pizza as a vegetable, but the United State Department of Agriculture is moving ahead with the first major changes to school meals in 15 years. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and first lady Michelle Obama announced the reform on Wednesday.

Implementing the new standards is estimated to cost $3.2 billion over five years, according to a USDA press release. The goal is to ensure that students have access to the following:

• Fruits and vegetables

• Fat-free or low-fat milk

• Appropriate portions for their age group

• Menus focused on reduced saturated fat, trans fat and sodium

Check out a sample menu that shows what kids might eat now, and what they’ll eat based on the new standards.

Schools will be given three years to fully implement the changes, starting with the 2012 – 2013 school year.
