Arizona Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords officially resigned after making her last appearance as a congresswoman on the House floor for the State of the Union address on Tuesday night.

She was greeted to uproarious applause, and her colleagues began chanting “Gabby! Gabby!”

Giffords announced last weekend that she would step down to focus on her recovery following the January 2011 assassination attempt against her. Giffords survived being shot in the head in an attack that killed six people and injured more than a dozen others.

Rep. Colleen Hanabusa posted to Twitter a farewell message on Wednesday:

Keep us brave and independent

The stories that Civil Beat dares to write take time, resources and sometimes, a healthy dose of bravery. But weʻre not afraid because our responsibility is to bring issues to you.

Your support ensures that we can remain independent and uncover the stories that, as one reader recently said, “would remain hidden otherwise.” Because if we don’t do it, who will?
