But Hawaii delegates have previously backed the appointment. Sen. Daniel Akaka voiced strong support for Cordray, calling him a “fierce advocate for consumers.” Akaka worked closely on the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform Act that established the new bureau that Cordray will head up.
In December, when Senate Republicans blocked Cordray’s appointment, Rep. Mazie Hirono issued a scathing statement about the move, and said she was “deeply disappointed.”
