Well after that disappointing bit about Hawaii’s net loss of college students, here’s something a little bit more encouraging:
- Hawaii has the lowest proportion of college students with debt (38 percent), out of all 50 states. South Dakota has the highest proportion — 75 percent.
- Hawaii also has the second-lowest average student debt amount, at $15,550. New Hampshire has the highest average, at $31,048.
- The average debt for students at University of Hawaii at Manoa is half the average amount for students at Hawaii Pacific University.
Got these data from the Project on Student Debt, which is a part of the Institute for College Access & Success (funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Ford Foundation, among others).
