Honolulu Nation’s Second Most Tolerant City

To honor Martin Luther King Jr. day Monday, The Daily Beast put out a list of the country’s 20 most “tolerant” cities. Honolulu checks in as No. 2 on the list, behind only Durham, North Carolina.

The rankings are determined by hate crime rates, anti-discrimination laws and diversity statistics.

Civil Beat‘s fact check of Gov. Neil Abercrombie‘s claim that Hawaii has the most diverse population on earth looked at racial and ethnic diversity. The Daily Beast rankings looked at those and went a bit further, also including same-sex couples per 1,000 households (6.2) and the most prevalent religion (Catholic, 17.5 percent).
