Friday is the last day the public has to comment on expanded protections for monk seals.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is considering expanding a critical habitat designation for the endangered mammals around the main Hawaiian islands. This protection already exists in the northwest Hawaiian islands.

The designation means that any action that requires federal funding, federal permits or a federal action, must be reviewed by NOAA to make sure it won’t harm the monk seal population.
