Concern about the issue is rising in Hawaii in the wake of some high-profile concussion injuries among high school athletes.
One of the most recent occurred last fall when a quarterback at Damien Memorial School was hospitalized in the ICU with bleeding on the brain after taking a big hit in a game. He was out of school for almost a month.
Read details of the bill, which would require the Department of Education and the Hawaii High School Athletic Association to develop the program and provide guidelines for public and private schools. It was introduced by House Health Committee Chairman Ryan Yamane.
