Here’s one draconian idea to get uninsured motorists off our crowded city streets: require proof of insurance to buy gas.

Honolulu City Council member Tom Berg wants the Hawaii Legislature to consider that proposal, and introduced a resolution to that effect back in October. It’s now on the agenda for the Committee on Safety, Economic Development and Government Affairs for Tuesday.

The agenda includes another Berg proposal related to insurance. Resolution 11-308, also introduced Oct. 24, would urge state lawmakers to require insurance carriers provide information to the counties on uninsured drivers.

What do you think — would these laws help clear Honolulu’s streets?
