Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is delaying Senate consideration of the Protect IP Act (PIPA), amid an outcry from high-profile websites and citizens across the country who said the measure would lead to government censorship. The vote was initially set for Tuesday.

“There is no reason that the legitimate issues raised by many about this bill cannot be resolved,” Reid said in a statement.

He also said that Congress “must take action” to stop counterfeiting and piracy online. Hawaii delegates reported hearing vocal opposition from constituents. (Read more from the Washington Post.)

Reps. Colleen Hanabusa and Mazie Hirono, as well as Sen. Daniel Akaka, all expressed concern about the current versions of PIPA and its House counterpart SOPA. Sen. Daniel Inouye has yet to make public his position on the matter.
