Laura Thielen, who was appointed to the city post in October after serving as Gov. Linda Lingle‘s land chief, assessed the current state of agriculture in Honolulu in a progress report submitted to the Honolulu City Council‘s Budget Committee Wednesday.
“The fact that Oahu agriculture has been growing in spite of the identified constraints is a testament to the strength of the people operating local farms and the growing consumer demand for local products,” Thielen wrote in the report. “This growth demonstrates the potential for further economic development, and the industry is large enough that agricultural economic development will help strengthen a diversified economy on Oahu.”
The ten-page document details the strengths of the island’s farming operations, the potential for growth, and the barriers to that growth.
