We’re going to continue to focus primarily on issues at Honolulu Hale, but there are some measures over at the Capitol across the street that will find their way into this space occasionally throughout the 2012 legislative session.
Today, the House Transportation Committee will hear a bill, proposed by the Hawaii State Association of Counties, that would require the state to share a percentage of fines for uncontested traffic infractions, since those cases don’t use (state) court resources.
The draft bill doesn’t specify what that percentage should be, and HSAC President Mel Rapozo told state lawmakers a couple weeks back that the counties would be happy with whatever generous number the state comes up with.
The likelihood of even a small percentage seems remote. The bill got a triple referral and would need to clear multiple hurdles just to survive the crossover deadline. The counties themselves are far more interested in holding onto their current share of the hotel tax than grabbing a small slice of this new pie.
The hearing starts at 9 a.m. in Conference Room 309, and includes seven other measures.
