Two different proposals related to Honolulu’s rail transit system are scheduled for hearings this week at the Hawaii Legislature.
The first, House Bill 2756, would fast-track transit-oriented development by requiring counties to act on proposals near rail stations within a set number of days and exempting those projects from ordinary zoning and land use laws.
The bill was introduced by 15 reps, but it got a triple-referral, so it needs to move quickly. Its first hearing, before the House Transportation Committe, is set for 9 a.m. Wednesday in House conference room 309
The second bill, Senate Bill 2959, would allow Honolulu to use some of its rail tax surcharge to fund “transit enhancements” such as landscaping, artwork and signage.
It, too, is scheduled for its first hearing Wednesday, at 1:15 p.m. in Room 224. That’s a joint hearing of the Senate’s Transportation and International Affairs and Public Safety, Government Operations, and Military Affairs Committees.
