Elementary and secondary students aren’t the only ones whose bus fares are going up.

University of Hawaii students may be paying more for their bus passes soon, too — but still much less than their elementary and secondary counterparts — according to an email from their student government association this week.

In February, ASUH plans to request an increase for the U-PASS fee. It is currently $20 per semester for all undergraduate and graduate students. However, in order for the program to continue, we must increase the fee to $30 per semester.

The reason why ASUH needs to increase the fee is due to the The Bus’s increased operating expenses and the rising fuel costs. Please keep in mind that ASUH does not collect any of the money from the fee; it goes straight to The Bus. The youth bus pass costs $30 per month for youth riders (ages 5 to 17) and $60 per month for adult riders (ages 18 and older). With our new agreement, U-PASS UHM student fee payers will receive 5 months of unlimited access to The Bus’s services for $30.
