The Blunt amendment wouldn’t just undo Obama’s rule, it would enable any organization to ”refuse coverage for critical care such as alcohol and other substance abuse counseling, prenatal care for single women and mental health care,” Akaka said.
The amendment would give companies with religious or moral objections the right to refuse certain coverage for workers. Blunt said on his website that he’s sticking up for companies’ “conscience rights.”
Akaka called the amendment “frightening” and “dangerous,” and said it would have “devastating health outcomes for 20 million women across our country.”
“To deny any women access to affordable health care, as this amendment would do, is unconscionable,” Akaka said. The Senate could vote on the amendment on Thursday.
