Sen. Daniel Akaka says it was during elementary school that he first learned how to budget for the future. In a video about the provisions he drafted for Congress’ comprehensive Wall Street reform package, he recalls those days.

“One of my teachers asked us to pick something we wanted to buy “I chose a yo-yo. We made a detailed plan on how much it would cost, how much we would have to earn, how we would earn it and how we would save it. This taught us to set goals, budget and plan to get what we wanted.”

Akaka said he feels empowered to give Americans the tools they need to understand finances as a result.
