Sen. Daniel Akaka was one of 26 Democratic and Independent senators who signed a letter to the founder and CEO of the Susan G. Komen Foundation, expressing disappointment and concern about the foundation’s decision to cut off funding to Planned Parenthood.

“We urge Komen to reconsider its decision…” the senators wrote. “It would be tragic if any woman—let alone thousands of women— lost access to these potentially life-saving screenings because of a politically motivated attack.”

Planned Parenthood Hawaii said it is not affected by the decision because it does not receive funding from the foundation — but its public affairs director told DC808 that the possibility of political pressure playing a role is “upsetting.”
