Zoning and Planning Chair Ikaika Anderson says he couldn’t support removing the “purple spot” because neither of the alternatives had been vetted by both the community and the planning department.

“We could have let the landowner go back and have golf course penciled in there, but my concern with that was that at no time during the council committee meetings was that golf course vetted,” he said of a proposal to simply remove the controversial light industrial zoning. “So I have no idea how the community feels about the golf course.”

Replacing the light industrial zoning with an agriculture designation would have opened the Council up to a challenge because that option was not vetted by either the Department of Planning and Permitting or the Planning Commission, Anderson told Inside Honolulu moments ago.

That leaves only one viable option: the purple spot.

“The light industrial option has been thoroughly vetted, and as it’s been thoroughly vetted, I’m comfortable bringing the plan back to the community at Kapolei Hale for their input as we make our decision,” he said.
