Tom Berg is the first candidate in any county race to file his nomination papers.

He’s running for a new term representing District 1 on the Honolulu City Council.

Another candidate pulled papers to run for that same race. Melvin Kahele, who finished third in the mail-only special election that launched Berg to Internet fame, is challenging Berg.

Former state lawmaker Alex Santiago pulled papers for District 1 yesterday, the first day to do so.
