Bill Would Secure Hawaii Domain Names

Fourteen state senators have put their name to Senate Bill 2985, which would do the following:

Requires DBEDT, in cooperation with the State’s chief information officer, to apply for the domain names .hawaii, .hi, and .aloha on behalf of the State of Hawaii and to develop procedures for licensing the use of those domain names. Appropriates funds for the application fee for those domain names and the administrative costs …

“It’s very important for us to apply for these top-level domain names to prevent someone from misappropriating them and possibly tarnishing the name, acronym and nickname of our state,” said Sen. Mike Gabbard, the bill’s chief sponsor, in a press release.
