It’s been about a decade since engineers and developers began working on plans and raising money for a seawater air conditioning system that would cool large swaths of Honolulu.

But it just might happen.

Pacific Business News reports that Honolulu Seawater Air Conditioning has received state permits and is looking to break this year.

The SMA permit granted by the state Department of Business, Economic Development & Tourism’s Office of Planning will allow Honolulu Seawater Air Conditioning to build a pumping and cooling station in Kakaako, as well as install the underground piping that will carry chilled seawater to cool downtown office buildings.
