The Hawaii Department of Education plans to apply for a waiver from federal No Child Left Behind requirements this fall. Meanwhile, the first 10 states to receive the waiver were announced today.

Superintendent Kathryn Matayoshi has said she is hanging back a little on this application so Hawaii can learn from others first. The states that get flexibility have to pitch a legitimate alternative system for holding schools accountable for progress on student achievement.
