Inmates at the Women’s Community Correctional Facility on Oahu have been growing cloned breadfruit trees, according to a press release from the Department of Public Safety. 

And they will be displaying the fruits of their labor at a media event on Tuesday that will include a rep. from the Breadfruit Institute — the agency that oversees the program. 

The goal of the Breadfruit Institute program is to produce a viable food source to feed hungry people in tropical regions like Hawaii and around the world. The trees started as 6-inch tall plants and are now over 7 feet tall and thriving under inmate care.
