While the measure, introduced by Speaker Calvin Say ”by request,” might have been inspired by conversations with the Hawaii State Association of Counties, that organization did not officially push for the bill and is not taking an official position on it.
The nonprofit has a process to come up with its legislative package each year — each of the four county councils must sign off on each measure. This year there are six proposals in the package. The group’s legislative efforts are limited to those six things, and they don’t divert from those six unless there’s a vote to add things to the package.
House Bill 2742 was scheduled to be heard at 2 p.m. No word yet on what happened with it in the House Judiciary Committee. We have a call out to Chair Gilbert Keith-Agaran.
