If you haven’t seen the ad that Michigan Republican Pete Hoekstra’s U.S. Senate campaign ran during the Super Bowl: Brace yourself.
It targets Democratic Sen. Debbie Stabenow, giving her the nickname “Debbie Spend-it-Now.”
The ad begins with the sound of a gong, and features a young Asian woman speaking in broken English: “Debbie spends so much American money. You borrow more and more from us. Your economy get very weak. Ours get very good. We take your jobs. Thank you Debbie Spend-it-Now.”
Hoekstra has rejected criticism that the ad is racist and filled with xenophobic stereotypes.
Sen. Daniel Inouye issued this statement about the ad on Tuesday: “Pete Hoekstra’s advertisement is outrageous. America should expect much more from a candidate for a high federal position. His racist thoughts are not welcome in the United States Senate.”
