“We want to apologize to the American public for recent decisions that cast doubt upon our commitment to our mission of saving women’s lives…” foundation CEO Nancy Brinker said in a statement. ”We will continue to fund existing grants, including those of Planned Parenthood, and preserve their eligibility to apply for future grants, while maintaining the ability of our affiliates to make funding decisions that meet the needs of their communities.”
Congressional delegates from Hawaii weighed in on the controversial decision. Sen Daniel Akaka was one of 26 senators who signed a letter urging Komen to reconsider. Rep. Mazie Hirono took to her U.S. Senate campaign Twitter account, asking people to sign a petition in support of Planned Parenthood. As of Friday morning, 835 people had signed it.
