It may feel like deja vu for anyone who followed the Legislature’s unsuccessful attempt two years ago and successful attempt last year to convert Hawaii’s elected Board of Education into one appointed by the governor.
Right now the governor selects Regent nominees from a list of compiled by the Board of Regents Candidate Advisory Council. That process is downright broken though, said Gov. Neil Abercrombie last year after the Senate rejected two of his nominees. Senate Education Chairwoman Jill Tokuda agreed and promised to reform the selection process.
This group of bills is the result of her promise.
