“I believe in God’s command to ‘love thy neighbor as thyself,’” Obama said. “I know the version of that Golden Rule is found in every major religion and every set of beliefs -– from Hinduism to Islam to Judaism to the writings of Plato.”
Sen. Daniel Akaka also spoke at the breakfast, offering a prayer for wisdom so that world leaders can “seek to empower people to lead quiet and peaceful lives in all godliness and honesty.”
He also prayed for world leaders to put aside “selfish ambition.”
“Bring them through strife and warfare to lasting peace, uniting them for the glory of your name,” Akaka said.
