Gov. Neil Abercrombie on Saturday (Feb. 4) signed into law House Bill 608, which appropriates $1.5 million to Queen’s Medical Center to perform kidney and liver transplants and $300,000 to the National Kidney Foundation of Hawaii to maintain its chronic kidney disease management program.

HB 608 was fast-tracked through the Hawaii Legislature and is the first bill from the 2012 session signed into law.

It’s estimated that there are currently 400 patients on the kidney transplant waiting list.
