A joint House Education and Labor committee is going to tackle some key education bills today that I bet we’re going to see a lot of this session:

  • The governor’s bill that would allow the Department of Education to establish a performance management system — meaning evaluations for teachers and principals — without collective bargaining. (Read more here.)
  • A proposed overhaul of the charter school system, and its accompanying transition plan, both results of last year’s charter school governance task force. (More coverage of the issue from Civil Beat.)
  • A bill that would get rid of tenure for teachers and principals. Pretty sure there is going to be a lot of testimony accompanying this one.

The first hearing for these proposals will be held at 2 p.m. today in conference room 309 at the Hawaii State Capitol.
