Ben Cayetano has an early lead in the 2012 mayoral race.

A Honolulu Star-Advertiser/Hawaii News Now poll shows the retired two-term governor with 44 percent support, compared to 35 percent for Mayor Peter Carlisle and 16 percent for former Acting Mayor Kirk Caldwell.

The poll of 549 registered Oahu voters was conducted Jan. 26-Feb. 5, starting a week after Cayetano announced his candidacy. The margin of error was 4.2 percent.

The poll also evaluated satisfaction with Carlisle’s job as mayor: 55 percent approved and 34 percent disapproved.
