Registration begins this month for children who will be eligible for kindergarten or junior kindergarten in the coming school year.

Children who will be 5 years old on or before Aug. 1, 2012 may enroll in kindergarten, according to a press release from the Hawaii Department of Education, and those who turn 5 between Aug. 2 and Dec. 31 may enroll in junior k.

Both are optional programs, as of right now, but there’s a bill in the House this year that would require children of 5 years or older to attend kindergarten.

In 2010, Gov. Linda Lingle signed an act to end the junior k program in 2013, but through this bill lawmakers are still exploring options to provide late-born children with kindergarten opportunities.
