The State of Hawaii Organization of Police Officers is expected to announce its endorsement of former Acting Mayor Kirk Caldwell at a 10 a.m. press conference at SHOPO headquarters.

Caldwell has been vocal in his support for a state bill that would require drivers to move over or slow down when passing an emergency response vehicle. A push for the bill was renewed after two Honolulu police officers died on the side of the road in two separate incidents.

In recent weeks, Caldwell’s opponents in the 2012 mayoral race have talked about SHOPO’s endorsement.

Former Gov. Ben Cayetano told Inside Honolulu he had interviewed with SHOPO and called the group “one union I respect.”

Mayor Peter Carlisle said he’d prefer not to get SHOPO’s stamp of approval.

“I’ve never gotten an endorsement from SHOPO. I do not want it ‘cause I think it would be bad luck,” said Carlisle, who was elected as Honolulu prosecutor four times.

More coming soon from the Caldwell/SHOPO presser.
