Robert Harris, director of the Hawaii Sierra Club, sent an email to Reps. Say, Chong, McKelvey and Oshiro this morning offering a “fix to their problem” of the single-use bag bill.
Here’s the text:
The media reports that the recommitment of HB 2260, which places a fee on throwaway paper and plastic bags, was an inadvertent mistake. On behalf of the Sierra Club, I’d like to offer a fix to this problem. HB 998 (HD1), a substantially similar bill, is currently before the Finance Committee. This bill could be heard and amended to include the language from HB 2260. This is a relatively simple and painless way to keep the discussion on this measure continuing. This bill has gathered wide-spread public support — from ABC Stores, Girl Scouts, and the Pacific Resource Partnership — and is a critical component to ensure the Watershed Initiative is supported in the years to come. We hope you will support this idea to increase Hawaii’s long-term sustainability.
