House Education Chairman Roy Takumi announced at the joint labor and education committee meeting today that a bill proposing elimination of tenure for teachers isn’t meant to kill tenure altogether.

The intent of the committee is to not pass this bill out, but to look at how we can modify the tenure system to better reflect the needs of students in the schools.

The goal of the bill is not to end tenure, but to develop a new tenure system that better reflects some of the challenges, and at the end of the session we’ll see what we have. If you want to oppose the killing of tenure, you can anyway, but that’s not what we’re trying to do.
