Carpool and bus lanes can be opened to regular commuters — for a price.
Some opponents of Honolulu’s rail system have floated tolls as one of the alternatives. John Brizdle wrote in a recent newspaper op-ed (subscription required) that “managed lanes” might offer traffic relief.
The New York Times had an interesting story Sunday about how different states are using their HOV lanes. Some are encouraging the use of low-emission and fuel-efficient vehicles by allowing those cars in the special lanes.
Others are turning them into so-called “Lexus lanes” that charge drivers a premium to use them. The T in “HOT lanes” stands for “toll.”
