Two of the largest public employee unions in the state have endorsed Kirk Caldwell‘s candidacy for mayor.

The Hawaii Government Employees Association (HGEA) and United Public Workers (UPW) are making the joint announcement right now in a press conference.

UPDATE: “Based on his record of collaborative leadership and his knowledge and experience to make positive changes, we believe Mr. Caldwell is the best candidate for Honolulu mayor,” Jon Gasper, HGEA’s State Political Action Committee Chair, said in a press release. “He truly cares about improving the City and is willing to work together with City employees and other groups to move Honolulu forward.”

Together, the two unions have more than 6,000 city workers as members.

Caldwell had previously been endorsed by SHOPO and the firefighters.
