Sen. Daniel Akaka is among a group of senators who wrote to Senate Appropriations leaders — including Chairman Daniel Inouye — to ask them not to cut funding for tsunami warning systems.
The White House proposed cutting about $1 million from the network of 39 data-collecting buoys. Akaka and five other senators signed a letter Tuesday that says such cuts would jeopardize Americans’ safety and economic stability.
A spokesman for Inouye told DC808 last month that the senator is taking steps to shore up the warning system.
