Honolulu Mayor Peter Carlisle has a message for elected and appointed officials: This is no time for pay raises.
Carlisle sent a memo this week to Honolulu Salary Commission Chair Jim Donovan, saying, in part:
“In light of the current fiscal difficulties facing the City, we are requesting no increases to the salaries of all elected and appointed officials.
“While we do appreciate and value the work of the City’s elected and appointed officials, we need our top administrators to lead by example in these challenging times and remember why we are here in the first place—to serve and advance the general welfare, health, happiness, safety and aspirations of the people of Honolulu.”
The mayor last year imposed across-the-board 5 percent pay cuts for all non-unionized city employees.
