The Kauai Island Utility Cooperative has been touted as a leader in the state’s push for clean energy. To this end, it was planning to install smart meters in customers’ homes.
But one resident has said not so fast, and filed a complaint with the federal court in Honolulu requesting an injunction to prevent the electric utility from moving forward.
According to a KIUC press release:
The complaint filed against KIUC asks the court to stop KIUC’s installation of smart meters, require KIUC to use an “opt-in” system for future installations of smart meters and have all KIUC members subsidize the expense associated with maintaining two separate metering systems.
Smart meters help people monitor their energy use, but the Kauai resident has raised alarm about privacy issues.
