The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is teaming up with the Department of Veterans Affairs to give Honolulu $636,000 in federal funds to help homeless veterans find permanent housing.

That’s according to Rep. Colleen Hanabusa, who said in a statement that the U.S. has an obligation to help service members transition back to civilian life. The money Honolulu will receive is part of nearly $73 million that’s being doled out nationwide.

“It is heartbreaking to see someone who once proudly wore the uniform – who made extraordinary sacrifices – end up on the streets with nowhere to go,” Hanabusa said.

One out of every six men and women in U.S. homeless shelters are veterans, according to a news release issued by Hanabusa’s office.
