Hirono: ‘I Will Miss His Passion’

In a statement she released Tuesday about the death of Democratic New Jersey Rep. Donald Payne, 77, Rep. Mazie Hirono remembered Payne’s devotion to civil rights and early education. 

“He spent his career tirelessly fighting for the underserved and less fortunate,” Hirono wrote. “It was an honor to work closely with him. A former teacher, Don was a constant advocate for civil rights and early education. I will miss his passion to ensure all students have access to a quality education.”

Hirono and Payne served on the Education and the Workforce Committee together. Read more about Payne, who died of complications from colon cancer.
