Rep. Mazie Hirono‘s U.S. Senate campaign responded to pressure from Democratic rival Ed Case about scheduling debates before the August primary. Here’s the statement provided by the Hirono campaign, and attributed to debate spokeswoman Elisa Yadao.

“On behalf of the Mazie for Hawaii, U.S. Senate campaign, we’re looking forward to participating in debates and forums. As previously stated, Congresswoman Hirono believes strongly that it is important for people to hear directly from the candidates and for the candidates to hear directly from the people of Hawaii.

“She intends to partcipate in constructive events which provide voters useful information, have meaningful reach and do not conflict with her congressional duties.

“We are currently reviewing all of the requests for Congresswoman Hirono’s participation and will make our decision on your proposal and all of the others soon.”
