Department of Environmental Services spokesman Markus Owens says the new diversion channel at the Waimanalo Gulch Sanitary Landfill is “working as designed.”

I had asked Owens how the landfill was holding up in all this wet weather, the worst rains I can remember here Oahu since heavy precipitation last year pushed medical waste and garbage-laden water out into the ocean.

He said Waste Management, the company that manages the landfill, said things are “a little muddy” in the unloading area, but otherwise things are good.

The Honolulu Planning Commission‘s contested case on the extension of permits for the landfill continues Wednesday morning at Mission Memorial. The siting committee for a new landfill won’t meet tomorrow as scheduled and will instead gather at some point next week, when all nine members are available.
