Lingle Faces ‘Very Difficult Task’

Understanding why former Hawaii Gov. Linda Lingle faces an uphill battle in her U.S. Senate race requires historical perspective. 

That’s according to Stuart Rothenberg, who emphasized in a Tuesday column for Roll Call that political savvy and fundraising prowess are decidedly not Lingle’s weaknesses.

“Lingle’s problem is that no Republican has won a Hawaii Senate race in more than 40 years, and the last Republican to win a statewide federal election was Ronald Reagan in 1984,” Rothenberg wrote. 

Making the shift from a state race to a federal one will be a “very difficult task” for Lingle, Rothenberg said.
