Here’s one not to miss.

Sen. Mike Gabbard donned a plastic bag lei and haku as he stood on the Senate floor, telling his colleagues his feelings about the single-use bag bill. It passed a Senate floor vote Tuesday, and will now go to the House.

It’s companion bill in the House never received a hearing by the Finance Committee, despite being passed unanimously by two other committees. You can read about its torturous path here

After Sen. Slom registered his opposition to the bill, Sen. Gabbard, who sponsored the legislation, gave an impassioned speech in support of it.

He donned plastic bag leis given to him by two keiki who also support the fees on single-use bags.

(Gabbard’s attire did not go unappreciated by Civil Beat’s newsroom.)

The measure passed with 23 votes in favor and two against. Five senators voted yes, with reservations.
