The Honolulu Ethics Commission told Mayor Peter Carlisle the city shouldn’t pay for his wife’s travels to Asia, even though the trips were covered by gifts from host communities.

Adrienne LaFrance today looks at other jurisdictions and finds that they don’t allow spouses to travel on taxpayers’ dime, either.

One example that the U.S. House Committee on Ethics gives is a trip to China paid for by the Chinese Agricultural Ministry. In this example, members of the House Agriculture Committee can accept the trip, and bring their spouses, but they are not permitted to accept expenses for airfare to and from China.
